How many kittens?

Progeny

Let’s play count the kittens!  The winner does not get a kitten-they’re all spoken for, but the winner will get a kitten made out of plastic bags.

Small print: Those living here and having heard from me are not eligible for this contest.  Prizes will be awarded in a couple of years when I go on a short home assignment.  Answers may not be responded to immediately due to W. African internet challenges.

Tunes

T10512This is my MP 3 player and recorder, which I love! It’s great for recording language lessons,
but even better for making road trips go faster. I was tooling down the road on a 9 hour trip, listening to
Relient K. Some of their stuff is deep,
a lot of it is just fun. Great car music!

And then, it happened. I pushed a button. Now, none of
these buttons are normal buttons. No,
these are special under 25 mystery buttons, with labels like A/B, M and various
squiggles. As I am over 25, I am completely unable to operate them.

Well, whatever I pushed got me stuck in one very light, very
fun 80s inspired album. Nice to listen
to once or even twice in a row, but the third time was a little much, and the
fourth time was unbearable. I couldn’t
fast forward, advance, skip, or do anything to get out of this one CD and onto
the other stuff that was on there. There
I was, on the side of the road, desperately pushing and holding buttons in
different sequences, nothing.  Just  “Charles in charge of our days, and our
nights…” over and over again.

When I got to where I was stopping for the night, I deleted
everything from the player, took the battery out, left it like that for a
couple of hours, and then put more music on, hoping and praying that it would magically
reset. It did.

“I want Charles in charge of me.” Maybe he’d know how to work my iriver.

Guts

Flower
I just love this little flower growing all by itself in the
middle of my sandy yard. Even though
it’s dry season and it’s not being watered. Even though I have an enormous clumsy dog and it’s not protected from
being trampled. Despite all of that, the
pretty little thing is blooming away in this hot and dry place. Hmmm.

Expecting

Expecting
This is my cat, Scruffy. If she looks a little bulgy, it’s because she’s pregnant. Again. Aargh! I just gave away the last
of my kittens a few weeks ago! If the
bulging wasn’t enough to give me the clue, the fact that she came when I called
her to take her picture would be-she came hoping for a treat. Not that she doesn’t have all the cat food
she can eat, but when she’s bulgy, she’s always looking for more. She likes lizards, but not the heads. Maybe I should have gotten her some at
lunch? Thankfully she doesn’t bring them
to me to share anymore.

She was on the kitty pill (yes, such a thing exists), but I
guess I didn’t start it soon enough. Oops. She’s perfectly healthy so
far-I’m told by various people here that the most likely result will be lots of
kittens. Like someone else did this and
they had eight. Um, she’s going to have
trouble feeding eight. I forsee sessions
with eye droppers, corners of hankies dipped in milk, and rapidly rereading
that veterinary classic All Creatures Great and Small.  Anyone want to send me Kittens for Dummies? Softy here will be very sad if some of the
kittens don’t make it.

Now, before I get a lecture on spaying my cat, there is no
unwanted pet problem here. At all. My kittens are a hot commodity-I could sell
them for a buck apiece, but I give them to my friends that want them as pets
and mousers. There are more than 8 good
homes waiting for Scruffy’s kittens, if need be. I hope there are less than eight, though!

I’m already working on some good kitten names. I’m thinking Sylvester, Tom, Felix-maybe some
from Cats? Grisabella? Suggestions?

Decking the halls

Tree
I just had to show this to someone! My very own little Christmas tree, complete
with lights!! Rhonda gave me the tree
and we shopped for ornaments together at Dollar General. By the way, it is not true that you can pack
a bendy tree any which way and then fix it when you unpack. I spent quite a while on it, but it still
looked like a bush until I put the star on top. Hurray for having a star and a tree that looks like a tree!

The lights are a very recent purchase-220 volts, so I can
plug them right in (from 6 pm to 1 am). The string was a little tricky, though, a circle of lights that begins
and ends at the outlet. Or maybe I’m
just spoiled by prelit trees? In any
case, I am tickled to death with my
little tree!

Tis the season

Christmas_decorationsThanksgiving is over, the Christmas season has begun!

It’s hard to get in the spirit when it’s 97 degrees out, but I’m doing my best.  Besides singing Christmas carols, I decorated today.  Doesn’t everyone decorate their screen doors?

I love these doors!  I wanted something that would be secure enough for me to leave open at night, so I had metal doors made.  I explained to the welder what I wanted, expecting some kind of grid or boxy thing over the screen.  But, he came and got me when he was done, really excited to show me the design he knew how to make.  I absolutely adore my grapes!  Can you see my Texan Santa hanging on the wall on the left?
