#2 Harmattan surprise

Hmtn We are in the middle of the hottest season here, where temps stay around 105-110, and the humidity is always at least 80%.  I call it wretched season.

But this morning I woke up and saw a glorious haze in the sky.  Gone are the heat and humidity, or at least the humidity, because the harmattan winds are back!  They blow lovely dry air in from the Sahara.  Also half the dust from the desert, but for today it's a dry heat again, so who cares?  Being in the States from December-February I thought I'd missed all of coolish season, but West Africa seems to have saved a day of harmattan just for me.

#1 Impromptu prayer meetings around my truck

Prmtg Yesterday I was all packed up, and my passenger was ready to go.  We were heading into town for me to do some errands, and for her to go to the hospital.  She has some kind of cyst growing on her hand, and it stops her from being able to work as a seamstress and a plastic bag artisan.

I was already a little behind schedule, but before we could leave, my friends gathered around the truck and prayed-for me, for my friend's trip to the hospital, for safe travel, and for other stuff I didn't catch.

This happens pretty often.  I have a lot to learn about prayer from my friends here.

500 things

Lst In the next two years or so, I'm going to blog 500 things I love about living here, in no particular order, in honor of Kate, someone I knew who loved living here too.  Most of them will be trivial, a few might be a deep, but that's my blog in a nutshell, right?

So they loaded up the truck and they drove to Co-buh-lee. Driving to the village today, you'll see how fast I can get an internet connection by how fast I get something posted.
Thanks for your thoughts and prayers as we drive!

And Now My Dog Died Too

C Charger stopped eating last week, so my friends in mmmBELLYmay land called the vet, who was treating him.  But, he died on Thursday.  I just got the news today, my friends didn't want to add another stress to my last days in the States.

So, bye bye Charger the Rhodesian Ridgeback.  Buddy the German Shepherd and I will miss you.  Scruffy the cat will not.

C and b

Parting is such sweet sorrow. Phooey.

Leaving Tonight I leave my family and friends to go back to mmmBELLYmay land.

I am heartbroken.

Yeah, I know Jesus said "All who have given up home or brothers and sisters or father and mother
or children or land for me will be given a hundred times as much."

Not really consoling me right now.  I know it should, but it isn't.

It reminds me of my reaction to the end of this story where the guy who lost all his kids had more to replace them.  I was like, "Fine, replace the cattle, replace the sheep, replace all the stuff, but you just can't replace the kids.  It's not the same."

Leaving is hard.
